Software Reviews of Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac Home & Student EditionCustomer Review: PC Convert - New to Mac Summary: 5 StarsI have been in the military for the past 17+ years used Microsoft products on a PC since Windows 3.1 was the newest software. I recently upgraded to a Macbook Pro and was looking for a way to view work and personal files (Word Docs, Excel Spreadsheets and PowerPoint slides) on my Mac. This product does all that and more! I simply love it, including the easy to set-up and use Entourage (which mimics MS Outlook). Now I can simply open Entourage and get my web-mail, keep my contacts and calendar all synched in one place. I am a total Mac convert and this was the key piece in my conversion. Also, there are three serial numbers with this product so you can load it on up to three different machines, which I already did for my Wife's Macbook Air. Amazing, 5 stars!
Customer Review: WORKS GREAT WITH MY MAC Summary: 5 StarsTHE OFFICE MAC HOME AND STUDENT 2008 IS BASICALLY THE BEST $100 YOU CAN SPEND OF ANY WORD DOCUMENT SOFTWARE, I USED TO HAVE THE PC VERSION OF HOME AND STUDENT 2007 ON MY OLD PC, AND I THINK THAT AFTER FIDDLING AROUND WITH THE MAC H&S 2008 FOR AWHILE IT IS BETTER THAN THE 2007. ALL YOU NEED TO DO IS INSERT AND DO THE STEP BY STEP LOADING AND YOU CAN USE IT INSTANTLY ON YOUR MAC. I HAVE THE 15.4" MAC BOOK PRO. THE BEST PART OF THIS SOFTWARE IS IF YOU HAVE MORE THAN ONE MAC THEN YOU CAN USE IT UP TO 3 DIFFERENT MAC'S WHICH IS AN ADDED BONUS. ALL I BASICALLY USE IS THE WORD PORTION BECAUSE I AM A COLLEGE STUDENT AND IT MAKES IT REALLY EASY TO TAKE NOTES WITH!! A MUST BUY FOR ANY COLLEGE STUDENT.
ALSO ONCE YOU ORDER IT, YOU RECEIVE IT FROM AMAZON.COM IN ABOUT 3 DAYS WHICH IS PERFECT TIMING B/C THAT WAS WHEN MY MAC SHOWED UP.
Customer Review: pretty pathetic Summary: 2 StarsIn my book, this product is pretty outrageous. I am actually a Microsoft Office aficionado. In particular, I have been using Excel for 23 years, and find Apple's "Numbers" to be a toy. I bought this MS Office H&S for my wife's new Mac and got nicked for the full price at the Apple store. If you insist on buying this dog anyway, then buy it here at Amazon. But that is another topic.
Some of the most basic features of Excel 2007 are not supported. Yes, we know no VBA, but this doesn't even support conditional formatting! The very basic home budgeting spreadsheet my wife has constructed in Excel 2007 cannot be used intact. And the install process is a parody of why people are deserting Microsoft in droves. AND, it is yet another UI. It is not Excel 2003, it is not Excel 2007. So, things you used to do automatically are now a chore again until you figure out the new way.
So, who is this product for? Not power users, because it is intentionally crippled. Not casual users, because they have to unlearn old moves and learn new moves. I'm going to encourage my wife to make the transition to "Numbers", and I would advise all casual (non-power) users of Excel to do the same. Power users better use VMWare or something and the real version of Excel.
Why 2 stars? It hasn't crashed on me. Yet.
Dec 10 updates. Skip the comment about no crashing. Also, had my first non-trivial Excel project. After struggling for a day (no exaggeration) with Excel for Mac, went back to my old Vista box and did the project from scratch in 3 hours.
There are some very irritating bugs in the accounting formatting.
Office for Mac is simply a putrid product.
Customer Review: Best place to buy it is on Amazon. Summary: 4 StarsI was using an Office 2004 for the Mac but needed a updated version since I'd purchased a MacBook Pro. Amazon is the way to go! I checked everywhere and this is definitely the best price. I didn't need the full version of office because all I really use is Office, Entourage and Excel. The Home and Student version includes these and I think Powerpoint. They are all full versions. I was able to read my old documents and since I don't really like .docx, I changed my preferences to save all documents as a .doc unless I specified otherwise. I'll always check Amazon first before buying my software from somewhere else, even the manufacturer (because with Amazon I can get free supersaver shipping!!!).
Customer Review: Must have for school Summary: 4 StarsWe bought a MacBook for our daughter who is in high school, and we decided to try out the Apple version of word processing called Pages. While Pages is just fine, and in some ways nicer than Word, when she had to collaborate on a project with her classmate, converting from Pages to Word and back resulted in lots of glitches, especially with objects inserted in the middle of text. We decided to get her the Microsoft Office suite, as well. It turns out that it is cheaper at Amazon than at Apple or Microsoft. The product works well and the files are truly interchangeable with PC files. She still prefers Pages for solo projects, but Word is the best for shared work. Overall, an excellent product.
