Software Reviews of Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac Special Media Edition

Customer Review: Office 2008 has some great improvements
Summary: 5 Stars

Compared to earlier versions of Office for Mac, 2008 is much more user friendly and has seemingly fit better into the more visual operating system than a few previous versions. The new templates and effects in PowerPoint alone made this purchase worthwhile over continuing to use an older version.

Customer Review: Not bad, it just does not really shine
Summary: 3 Stars

If you are in the corporate world and work extensively with Excel or you have the need to use Entourage with Exchange than I do recommend buying Office 2008. However, if you are person who just does word processing or presentations then IWorks 09 will work for you. IWorks 09 will open Office 2007 documents.

As far as the special edition, I did not really use it because I have been a Macromedia/Adobe user for too long and will continue to use their products.

Yes I do recommend to product; however, I suggest you download the 30 day trial from Microsoft prior to deciding to buy it.

Overall everything works well. Except for Entourage wich has major problems working with an Exchange Server. If you use Exchange Server, use a PC and Outlook.

Customer Review: I'm sticking with MS Office 2004
Summary: 3 Stars

I've used Microsoft Office 2004 for quite awhile on my three Mac PowerBook G4s and have never had any problems. Nonetheless, I was anxious to try this updated 2008 version. I had no problems with the installation, although, like others, I was highly annoyed with all the updates that had to be downloaded right off the bat. I used the new MS Office 2008 for a few weeks, but didn't really notice a huge improvement over the 2004 version. In fact, like at least one other reviewer here, the program froze on a number of occasions while I was using it. Luckily, I never lost any crucial data during these freeze-ups, but they were frustrating enough for me to decide to uninstall the 2008 version and go back to MS Office 2004. To be fair, I suppose the issues I had with this program could possibly be related to the fact that my Mac PowerBook G4s are older. But since all of my machines meet the minimum system requirements listed for the software, it shouldn't be a factor. For this Mac user, MS Office 2004 works just fine, and I'll stick with it now.

Customer Review: Great Productivity Software Suite for the Mac
Summary: 4 Stars

I have a MacBook Pro and previously owned the MS Office 2004 edition. When I first converted from a PC, I found myself stumbling around the 2004 applications looking for things. The 2007 release of MS Office changed to a "ribbon" interface that is similar to the toolbar setup of MS 2008 for Mac. It should make for a smoother transition for new MS Office for Mac users. But besides that, the interface for 2008 is neater and more organized. I've also found the performance to be much faster than the previous version, and not as prone to crashing.

At home, I use MS Office 2008 for Mac for editing and reviewing work files. I also use the Excel to keep track of personal spreadsheets. I find both of these very easy to use and love having the ability to have these programs on my Macintosh. A student version of the program probably would have been sufficient for me based on my past use. While I do not need the functionality at home, the stripping of the VBA (Visual Basic for Applications) is an issue for some users that they should consider before upgrading. There is also no Analysis Toolpak, which again is only a concern for higher-level users.

However, the Microsoft Project Gallery is a great new application that I did not have on my 2004 student version of the MS Office software. You can create business cards, brochures, flyers, calendars, stationary, resumes, envelopes, labels, etc. It's kind of like a bonus "PrintShop" being bundled with the software... but with some very professional - and also some fun, sleek -templates. The 2008 version also adds Microsoft Exchange capability to the e-mail program Entourage - a huge plus for those who use Microsoft Outlook at work and what to sync their e-mail at home.

Overall, I highly recommend this product. I would recommend that you research the differences between each version of MS Office 2008 for Mac prior to purchase. This will ensure you are getting all the features you need. If your budget allows, this version is great to give yourself some features that may take a while to grow into. But once you do, you will be happy to have them.
