Software Reviews of Microsoft Office Home & Student 2010 - 3PC/1User (Disc Version)

Customer Review: Better but different....Again
Summary: 4 Stars

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
Office Home and Student comes packed with Word, Excel, Powerpoint and One Note.
For a small home office that's arguably all you really need. If you're a fan of Outlook you'll need to buy a bigger package. Publisher and Access only come with the professional version for now.
The big news these days is that there is actually a pretty solid competitor out there right now that with the exception of a few bugs and glitches is shaping up to be a nice package of Office like tools. The hook for this alternate package is that it's free. So How does Office Stack up to Open Office?

Office has changed quite a bit over the years and while some cool features have been added and some work flow features have been streamlined, Microsoft just can't seem to decide on an interface. The apps are all still there and they work pretty much the same but once again everything looks different.
This seems to be a trend with Office but I'll leave it alone and just say that, It's not THAT different, It's much cleaner and I hope they leave it alone for awhile. Let the users get used to well... using it.

Another thing to note quickly is that Office applications load up considerably faster than Open Office applications on my PC. Not sure if this is coding or just Microsoft allowing it's apps to run of the base OS. It is noticeable though.

SO, for the applications included here's a little summary.

Word is word is word, really it's been the same app for years. You'll notice if you go to the product page that Microsoft isn't really boasting any new features. So what makes it worth the buy. Well even though I just complained about it I'd say the interface. Yes it's pretty much the same but with one key new feature this time I really think they nailed it and I hope it stays that way. All of your tools can be organized (and customized) on something called the ribbon, it's the same ribbon that was there before but cleaner and customizable. It's basically a tool bar with tabs. But the nice thing is that everything you might want to do is finally up above with icons associated with it rather than nested in some drop down menu somewhere. The best part is, as I mentioned, that this ribbon and it's tabs can be customized. Tabs, tools, and everything else can be placed in the order you want. You can also completely minimize the ribbon to give yourself a clean maximized work space, no clutter is nice. As far as the competition is concerned I'd say that the new Word has a foot up for sure, well except for the whole "free" thing. It's really well designed and feels like a clean, streamlined typing and word document program, finally.

Excel is still Excel. I have yet to find anything different about Excel either. Other than the aforementioned customizable ribbon. But Excel really didn't need much. It's a killer application that allows you to create dynamic spreadsheets, invoices, even amortization calculators if you understand the language. The first time I opened Excel I was pretty intimidated but the more I mess with it the happier it makes me. It really is an application that any business owner, book keeper or home keeper for that matter should own and learn. If you're not familiar with it, Excels key feature is the ability to start from scratch and build your own forms that are capable of calculating numbers from rows or columns and doing just about any maths you feel like putting in. It's boring to look at but incredibly powerful and a huge time saver in the right hands. On the flip side the competition has released a competitor that is well... pretty much the same thing, for free. But again the competitions interface is not sleek and slim, and while it is customizable, it's nowhere near as intuitive, in my opinion. But again... it's free. Which is hard to argue with when you're on a budget.

Powerpoint. Now here's where Open Office has failed, it's "impress" presentation app has crashed during a number of presentations and frustrated quite a few friends and colleagues. When you're delivering a presentation and money is riding on the results the last thing you want is an unsteady application delivering your slides for you. Powerpoint also remains the same but like the others gets the spiffy new clean and customizable ribbon. All of the features are still there, you have the tools to really make your presentation shine if you put in the hours. So far it seems like video and Swf support is solid. Having had issues in the past with this it's a place that I cross my fingers often.
For those who aren't familiar Powerpoint is a presentation creation application (say that 5x fast). It gives the user the ability to set up still or animated slides that can then be presented and navigated for an audience. The navigation is standard and easy and the features that have been added over the years for spicing up the presentation are pretty numerous. It's a great little app for those who don't want to pay a design firm to build a presentation but need more than a blackboard and some handouts.

One Note is Microsofts new Organization tool for families, business, etc. It's basically a customizable folder that notes, documents and even media can be stored in and then accessed from anywhere you have a connection. The notebook contents can be stored or shared on Windows Live and as long as you have a Live account you can get at them from just about any PC or theoretically Palm Pilot/Blackberry/Etc.
This is a feature I'm still messing with but honestly, there are already so many established ways of accomplishing the same thing I'm not seeing myself using it. Notes can be passed via text message or email, same with media. We now have chat for more immediate conversations as well as video chat and Voice over IP (VOIP). If you have a web based email service you can already access your emails and any media files that have been sent. Most web based email apps have organization options like folders and searches. It's hard for me to imagine that One Note will be replacing these well established systems that people have grown so fond of. Personally I love my Gmail account and I'm on Gtalk all day. Both of those applications are again, free.

So in short, if you have an office that uses these tools already and need new copies for new employees or just considering upgrading. It's a great pack of tools and the new streamlined look and work flow is nice. Powerpoint is pretty much irreplaceable at this point unless you know Flash or are willing to contract a firm to design your presentation for you.
These are all applications that show just how long they've been in use and how well refined they've become. But on the other hand if you're looking for a cheap way to open Word Docs or save your own, there are free alternatives these days that work just as well, minus the fancy interface.

Is it worth the money any more?
Depending on your situation and usage, Absolutely.

But if you're a student or a parent looking for a quick and small office apps solution you might consider the alternative first. If you find it frustrating, well you know these guys aren't going anywhere.
