Software Reviews of Microsoft Streets & Trips 2009 [OLD VERSION]

Customer Review: Solid map program
Summary: 4 Stars

This is my second MS Streets and Trips program. I was disappointed with an older version (maybe 2003 or 2004) in that there were certain things I couldn't do with it. I switched to a DeLorme product. After several of these I had issues with the programs not being up to date, inaccuracies, and the like. So, after reading the reviews of both the 2009 DeLorme and MS map programs on Amazon (thank you all for your comments) I decided to try the MS again, and I've not been disappointed. Having said that I should say that I'm not using it with a GPS system so I don't know how those features work. All in all, as a map program (in conjunction with Google) that I can review things from my computer at home I have been pleased.

Customer Review: Great Road Trip Planner!
Summary: 5 Stars

For someone, like me, who takes a lot of road trips, this is an excellent product. While there are many free map / direction services online, this software really is a notch above them and has many great features that allows you to plan on your trip in detail.

Customer Review: Easy to Use---Great Directions
Summary: 5 Stars

I love this product. It is easy to use and I like using the route planner to get maps and directions between two points. Much better and clearer than things like MapQuest. I also love the features to find hotels, gas stations, restaurants etc. along the route. Seems very up to date on these. I've had Streets & Trips 2002, 2006 and now 2009. Better than other mapping programs I've used so I keep coming back.

Customer Review: This version is a noticeable step down
Summary: 2 Stars

The basic Streets and Trips is a well-designed, fairly user-friendly product. And it may still be the best on the market. But the laziness with which this most recent update was produced is inexcusable. I have bought a new version of Streets and Trips every year or two just to stay up with the new roads. But the 2009 version actually has significantly LESS information than the previous versions. You used to be able to search for an intersection, just by putting an ampersand between the two streets, such as "5th Avenue & Main Street, 97201". More often than not, the 2009 version is unable to find the intersection - even for many intersections which the 2007 version had no trouble finding.

Similarly, when you enter an exact address, the 2009 version can find it only about half the time. As often as not, it just gives you the street. If the street is seven miles long, that's not helpful.

Finally, there are bugs in the routing software. When I asked for a route from Baxter State Park in Maine, to Bates College, which is also in Maine, it gave me a route that went well into Quebec, did a hairpin turn, and came back to Maine. (And needless to say, that is not the most direc route.)

These inadequacies didn't exist in previous editions of this product. It represents a slipshod approach and a lowering of standards. Microsoft should not be rewarded with your money.

Customer Review: While it has interesting features, I am still prominently using Google Maps
Summary: 3 Stars

This is the first time I ever got a maps and streets program. Usually, I just go onto google maps and search it up. The installation process of this was easy. Although, for some reason, the first installation got corrupted and I had to re-install, which is not a big deal to me.

I am usually an expert when it comes to computer softwares and this took just a little bit of a learning curve. While it is pretty easy to figure out how to plan a route, it would have been nicer if the route options had its own button in the top bar.

I enjoyed the options, seeing how much fuel would be needed to get to a certain place. What I found though when searching for nearby places is that it was very difficult to find some restaurants, even though I know it is there. And searching for Six Flags was kind of an art as it had to be typed in a certain way for it to find the one that we were looking for. Another feature that it lacks is the text message feature. While I have found a way to text an address to my phone, there was really no option for me to text the full route to my phone, which was irritating. I also tried to look online and in the manual with no real help.

Overall, it's a decent software with still a lot of features I have no use for (GPS for example). I still do go onto google maps since it is easiest way to get directions from point A to B.
