Software Reviews of Microsoft Streets & Trips 2009 [OLD VERSION]

Customer Review: Different, not better
Summary: 3 Stars

I've been a streets and trips user since 2004 and this one has the new map-point interface (glitzier but less functional) and marginal improvements in map accuracy. If you are used to using the "box" method of defining an area to look at, forget it, it's gone, probably to help Microsoft sell more wheel mice (wheel zoom still works). On the plus side, you can FINALLY paste addresses into the address box by right-clicking (very useful if you pull an address from a web site). There is a new political map and terrain map option that defines state or country borders a little better or (slightly more useful) if you are travelling through mountains or plains. The most painful thing about this program, like S&T 2008, is the digital rights management. The software key is validated on-line. If you have to reinstall your software, be prepared for a frustrating 30 minute+ call to Microsoft. Hey, Microsoft, if you want people to buy this program, please consider simply selling updates rather than making people purchase and install an entirely new program each year. I would have gladly paid the $40 for an online map update and would not have had to go through the pain of uninstalling my 2008 software and reinstalling 2009. Overall, the program does exactly what it is supposed to and runs rings around any handheld GPS. $40 is not a lot to pay to be able to plan your trip down to the last fast-food or gas-stop minute.

Customer Review: Not the best in-motion navigator, but it works
Summary: 3 Stars

I was looking for a navigation package to use in our motorhome. Since size wasn't a factor and I had recently purchased a new laptop, I decided on a GPS USB plug-in dongle paired with MS Streets and Trips 2009.

Overall I'm less than impressed with Microsoft's foray into mapping software. Much like their personal finance software (MS Money), I fear they've gotten into this branch of the business for competitive reasons vice a real desire to be the best. I've got two car-based GPS systems in other vehicles, and they are much better optimized for the in-motion navigation mission.

The GUI used in MS S&T 2009 takes a while to master (I'm a long way from 'master' status after a month). Changing the default route (if you know another route is superior) is a bit clunky, and the mapping of roads is a bit sparse in rural areas. I've gotten the "Encountered an error and must close" message several times while underway. A re-boot of the program usually solves the issue, but I've not had such an issue - ever - with my auto-based units.

Overall, this product is inferior to Google Earth for stationary mapping, and inferior to just about any preloaded auto-based GPS system for navigation purposes. Since one can do both on one platform, however, I'd rate it overall as "fair".

Customer Review: Another great software

Customer Review: Laptop navigation
Summary: 5 Stars

We bought Streets & Trips 2008 during our trip in 2008 and found it to be very helpful in finding destinations, and in navigating the Interstates and the streets of small towns. So, with a new laptop in hand, we purchased the 2009 version without the GPS sensor, since we still had the sensor from the 2008 version. Now, we'll travel anywhere with confidence.Microsoft Streets & Trips 2009

Customer Review: Streets & Trips -- A success
Summary: 5 Stars

purchased it to link address to a map. I could not figure out this would do it but as soon as I loaded the program, it identifed people by addresses in my computer automatically. I'm still tinkering with it and I have not even read the instructions yet. So far, I'm pleased.
