Software Reviews of Microsoft Streets & Trips with GPS Locator (2010)

Customer Review: Very Satisfied
Summary: 5 Stars

This is the first time I have used Streets and Trips with GPS although I have used the program w/o GPS for the last several years. Overall I am very satisfied with the functioning of the GPS. The directions are solid and it does reroute very quickly when changes are made by you. The only warning I would give new users is to be familiar with your route and make adjustments accordingly. This is due because the program will direct you to the shortest route without taking into consideration time of day and traffic flow. The program is very easy to get used to and with wireless mobile broadband you can easily obtain current traffic conditions. I would highly recommend this program.

If you are looking for a mobile GPS for a laptop, this program is the answer.

Customer Review: On a Netbook
Summary: 4 Stars

I installed Streets and Trips 2009 on a Lenovo S10e netbook for testing. It is running Windows XP with 1.5 GB of ram. Here are a few brief observations:

-Performance is satisfactory. Routing in real time worked well, there were no complaints.
-As should be expected, the GPS worked best outdoors or in a car. It takes a while to lock, but that is the case with many handheld gps units.
-Screen real estate is at a premium. Microsoft's interface does not lend itself well to the lower resolution of a netbook, but it is still useable enough. To maximize screen space for the maps and other windows, Right-Click on the task bar at the top, and turn off large buttons - and to claim even more space - turn off standard view. The task bar will disappear, but you can still access all features from the drop down menus.

The combination of Microsoft's software, the gps and a netbook makes for an interesting alternative to a dedicated gps unit. There was the moment where I realized that Microsoft's GPS unit would not automatically be configured with Streets and Maps, so I had to do it, which was not difficult, but was also unnecessary. That is the nature of the beast; it is a computer application - not a gps appliance. It benefits from a richer interface due to the presence of a keyboard and mouse, but for some the focused simplicity of a dedicated gps will be enough.

Customer Review: Different than a car GPS
Summary: 5 Stars

Although This will let your laptop become an automobile GPS for a bargain price, this software is not the same as the single purpose 4 inch units that may be better at just getting you from point A to point B. The big picture you can get on your laptop is great for planning especially when you don't have an exact destination in mind. This can show every hotel, restaurant, pub, shopping center, museum etc. at a scale that lets you see where you have to go. If you are going on a trip you can view the neighborhood around the hotel you are considering and see what's there, and you can print a detailed map of the area. You can easily see all the highways on your route and avoid the shorter routes full of traffic lights that a hand held unit will often send you on. The software has a lot of features that take time to learn. One review says you have to "press spacebar" to get voice commands, you do not have to do this, pressing spacebar will repeat the last command which is not repeated automatically because there is a progress bar at the bottom which tells you how far it is to the next turn. This software and the European "autoroute" version is invaluable for a frequent traveler but it is different than the small GPS units and is not meant as a direct replacement for them.

Customer Review: road types
Summary: 4 Stars

For the most part it's a very good program. One thing that it does need is a legend of some type identifing the different road types. I use it as a GPS while I escort oversize loads and the road types listed by the states are not the one used by the states making it hard to locate the intersedtions.
