Software Reviews of Microsoft Streets and Trips 2007 with GPS Locator [DVD] [OLD VERSION]Customer Review: Streets and Trips Flunks Summary: 1 StarsWe used Streets and Trips for an 8-hour road trip. The GPS unit lost and failed to reacquire about every 15 minutes. We had to fiddle and restart the program the whole trip. We were frustrated and worn out just fighting with the computer software. When we took a wrong turn, it told us "off route" and "proceed to route" (no help) and then lost the satellites again. The little maps of the intersections that we printed out from the program were too small to get a perspective of where we were. On the return trip we ditched the dumb Streets and Trips and used our old fashioned maps and enjoyed the trip home without getting lost.
Customer Review: Useful when you're out of town Summary: 4 StarsThe possitive side: it's a very good option for the road traveler. I liked it a lot when I was traveling through a zone I did not know and I could find a set of ~30 restaurants within the area I was driving. The advantage over regular GPS devices is that you can acually see those locations in the map, and pick the one you need. The maps database is very good, and it is quite detailed. The GPS hardware is easy to install, and I had no problems with the computer.
On the down side: controls are not intuitive or easy to use. I have been using it for a month now and I found out the F3 key is quite important when you need to find a new route. You may need another person driving with you to get the best out of it, or rather stop frequently to reset the directions. This is a disadvantage with regards to normal GPS, which re-calculate the route automatically without doing a thing.
I was using this one on an old laptop computer, and after a long 5 day trip the computer started having a failure in the graphics card. It might have been related with the old PC or to the use while driving, but this is something that is worth sharing.
Overall, I am happy I bought this product. I was not willing to pay $200 for any GPS device, at least not so far...
Customer Review: Excellent Mapping and GPS Unit Summary: 5 StarsWe used this program on a recent trip from Oregon to Wyoming including a trip to Denver. The maps were excellent, even for very small towns, and this makes the first time I've been to Denver without getting lost and wasting a hour or two trying to get found again! The voice prompts were decent, but it really helped a lot to have my 12-year old son navigating. As mentioned in some of the other reviews, once you get off route, you don't get any new verbal directions to get back on route. The map with the route trace makes it easy to do that, though.
I really liked the flexibility in making my routes, too. We could add in stops, find a large variety of points of interest, gas stations, etc, and change the route to alternate roads easily. Many gas stations and stores were NOT in the data base, but most of the big name companies were.
The route planner included estimated time of travel which proved to be quite accurate once I set the options for my driving style. We could also measure driving distances easily on the go.
The biggest thing I'd like to see added is some sort of terrain or topographic feature. I wanted to try some alternate routes that looked shorter than the Interstate selected by the program, but I didn't want to get into 30 miles of 20 mph curves!
Customer Review: A Very Good GPS Mapping Choice Summary: 4 StarsWe use Microsoft Streets and Trips along with DeLorme Street Atlas USA for storm chasing. Street Atlas actually has slightly better road detail but the Streets and Trips mapping shows city names when the other won't. This software also tends to show minor paved roads better. Street Atlas sometimes shows minor paved roads as unpaved.
The GPS reciever has always worked well and is our standard hardware.
Our team of storm chasers needs reliability, especially when there's a tornado on the ground. This is a good system.

Customer Review: Useful but not handy Summary: 4 StarsI bought it for my road trip.
Pros: Trip planner, Night Mode, Road Construction information (helps enticipate delays), Point of Interests (Business Locations, Attractions, Gas Stations). Ease of Use (I am computer literate). No problems driving in Bright sunlight.(I have seen other gps systems having problems with it.)
Cons: Takes time for startup, which is annoying. Voice prompts does not say street names, which requires driver to glance screen for exact turn location.
I had known a passenger assistance is always required. I was prepared for that. Also advice you take smaller laptops or PDAs.
