Software Reviews of Microsoft Streets and Trips 2007 with GPS Locator [DVD] [OLD VERSION]Customer Review: a very useful gadget, but dangerous when driving Summary: 3 StarsThe GPS took a while to find the correct location when turned on the first time. Unlike even the simplest Garmin, there is no indication what the GPS error might be. But then the GPS worked amazingly well, even in the streets of Manhattan (when driving, not when turned on in a stationary location between tall buildings).
The directions are sometimes wrong ("turn left" while you actually have to "take a ramp right"...). Worse, the progran uses a different language than the highway signs and says things like "turn left on I-999" instead of "turn on I-999 South" (which may require going right first...). Particularly at complicated interchanges something like "follow route 99" might be less error prone.
The program makes one type addresses to find destinations instead of just clicking on a place, and fuss with the mouse switching between the map and the rest of the interface, which is outright dangerous when driving and annoying at any time.
The database of places is rather incomplete. There does not seem to be any online update.
Customer Review: Typical MS Summary: 3 StarsThis is my first GPS product, so I don't have much to compare to. It is what you would expect from Microsoft, it does basic functions but is unintuitive and poorly designed. I purchased the product to use on vacation from LA to Las Vegas. I had a passenger running the laptop while I drove. It got me to where I was going, especially after I got used to audible directions (like judging how far .2 miles is and the audio glitch of "take tram left" means take next ramp left). If you went past your turn, it took S&T a minute to regenerate new directions. Every time we powered the laptop down, it would loose the communications port and we had to refind through the control panel new hardware screen. This is a very mediocre product, so typical of Microsoft, but, compared to hand held devices, the price is nice. This is why I'll raise it from 2 to 3 stars.
Added your own points is cumbersome and hard to figure out without reading the instructions (a big strike for me). It did have some cute feature like telling your altitude, MPH and time to destination. The streets were quite detailed, including a national park in Nevada.
This is a very mediocre product, so typical of Microsoft, but, compared to hand held devices, the price is nice. This is why I'll raise it from 2 to 3 stars.
Customer Review: Works Great! Summary: 5 StarsIf you can deal with the amount of light that hits your laptop screen, this works as well as any travel help. ie, turn by turn directions GPS. For the price it's hard to beat. The update feature hopefully will be as good. I used it using an inexpensive Xantrex converter in the car for longer trips.Beware of car rental agencies disabling the cigarette lighter plug in.I highly recommend this product.
Customer Review: Great tool Summary: 5 StarsI use this program to track my prospects and clients. I am able to download the data into Microsoft Streets and Trips and plot each of my prospects and clients on the map. The GPS works well. Since it's not a true GPS unit, I don't mind that it does not read out street names.
Customer Review: Microsoft Streets and Trips 2007 with GPS Locator Summary: 4 StarsHandy little tool when traveling. It would be nice if it also came with a CD so I could print directions out from my desktop instead of having to hook the laptop to the printer. The only complaint I have is that the directions take one through towns instead of by-passing them, even when using major highways. Be aware that the GPS may take you through backroads and even onto dirt roads even though the options are set to freeways and highways. The only way to check if there is road construction is online.
