Software Reviews of Microsoft Streets and Trips 2008 [OLD VERSION]

Customer Review: Streets and Trips
Summary: 4 Stars

I give the years product a 4. Its a good map program to have on your desk top or Lap top PC. Due to the competition with GPS units, I was hoping for better updated mapping. A few of the same Flaws from 2007 were there. A good example is new housing developments. Early 2007 maps (ie. Map quest and goggle earth) didn't show any updated street information of my address. By the end of 2007 these web sites had been updated. Microsoft's 2008 version still does not show my area or the new shopping centers. If you don't have a GPS and need detailed mapping, then Microsoft Streets and trips would be a good buy.

Customer Review: Maps
Summary: 1 Stars

Really disappointed in this software. I moved into a new home development two years ago and it is still not contained in the 2008 version of Microsoft Maps. To bad......I really like the original software, but don't bother to spent the money to upgrade

Customer Review: Very good PC map program, great for rally routes
Summary: 4 Stars

With GPS a common product now, plus Mapquest and Google Maps pretty easy to use, these programs are not as important as they once were, but they do have a place, especially in planning a trip. Once you get used to it, it does a great job of laying out a route. Yes, you can get from point A to B with GPS but this makes side trips much easier. I use it mostly for rally routes. Nothing like it for something like that. Find it very accurate, which is important for rallies. I got the version with the gps device for rally work but given the size of a PC, I don't use it for anything else. That is what my Garmin is for.

Customer Review: Excellent Software
Summary: 5 Stars

I have been using Streets and Trips 2002 for the past five years and have been completely satisfied with it. It has come in handy on numerous occassions during trips (as I never travel without my laptop) and when trying to find locations mentioned in commercials or addresses of friends and family. We travel cross-country frequently. This new version is like icing on an already perfect cake. It adds wonderful new flavors and toys, especially the GPS tool. I haven't had much opportunity to use this new version yet, but after a quick trial run to find my address buried in the back woods, I'm thrilled.

Customer Review: Streets & Trips disappointing
Summary: 2 Stars

I purchased S&T 2008 to replace S&T 2006. I was disappointed to find that the street on which I purchased my current home in Jul, 2004 is not included in the map database. That's 3 1/2 years. It is in the database at Navteq (supplier of the map software) and is in my wife's recently purchased Garmin Nuvi 250 (also Navteq). Why not in Microsoft Streets and Trips? And more important, what other streets are missing.
The second issue I have is that the latest version automatically recalculates the route if for any reason you deviate from the original saved route. I use this program with my motorhome and spend a significant amount of time prior to each trip determining what sights I want to see and the routes that will take me there. Sometimes I select the most direct, sometimes the most scenic, and many times it is a combination of both with side trips included. If I deviated from the original route, the 2006 version told me I was off route (which I already knew), but still followed my progress on the map until I was back on the original route and I could continue as planned. With the new version (2008), as soon as I leave a route, it recalculates a new route (shortest or most scenic) to my next destination and deletes the original route. I therefore lose all info about other destinations I might have chosen to include. 2006 version had an option to recalculate a new route, 2008 version does it automatically. I plan to re-install the 2006 version and not use the 2008.
