Software Reviews of Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional Upgrade [OLD VERSION]

Customer Review: not compatible with anything
Summary: 3 Stars

I would not recommend this OS despite using it at work for almost a year without a BSOD. It is unsuitable for home computing, and is a disaster to upgrade from Win 98SE. My attempt to do this resulted in a long list of incompatible software, hardware and drivers. The upgrade got 15 minutes in and stalled. OpenGL is not supported and is is very bland and lacking in features. If you are running a PC with low RAM (eg 128) Win 2k will really struggle. It is suitable for a small business network where the owner is trying to sidestep paying Microsoft for several copies and activations of XP. For a fresh install and with the right spec machine it is undoubtedly hugely more stable than 9x versions (you get crashes, but they don't crash the whole OS). However XP is out and is a far superior OS in all cases.

Customer Review: A gigantic improvement over NT.
Summary: 5 Stars

The amount of BSODs have all but disappeared. If you have a laptop, you can't go wrong with this. NT on a laptop was a nightmare, but this is a great OS for it!

Customer Review: Good OS for heavy duty tasks
Summary: 4 Stars

I've been using W2K since 1999 (MSDN Beta 3) and bought the whole OS in early 2000. I've been working with it since and has been one of the best decisions I've ever made when it comes to stable OSs. It's a great upgrade since it makes things way easier the way they were on NT 4, but it also has its downsides. It's not easy to learn for the average computer user, meaning that you've got to be more aware the way your computer works, although no special training is required (you can learn just by reading thoroughly the help files or finding advice on the net). Sometimes programs crash (although Windows does not), but can leave a fairly unstable environment to work with, and if that happens, well, Windows becomes stupid, and maybe, you'll have to reboot. UNIX based systems are a better choice, but in a growing Windows world, this one is a good headstart into the corporate computing environment.

Oh, BTW, take your eyes off Windows XP (either Home or Pro). It'll only slow you down. Better get this one.

Customer Review: I would not recommend this OS, stick with Win 98SE
Summary: 2 Stars

This is the quirkest OS I have ever used. It requires to much input for my liking and the passwords are a pain in the neck on the network, I know it is for security, but it still stinks. On one computer the OS would not even load, I spent over 2 days on the phone with Microsoft and another week via email just trying to get the stupid thing loaded, Microsoft finally gave up and gave me the address to return it directly to them for a refund.

Customer Review: It would have been a good os if they'd fix it...
Summary: 3 Stars

2000 would be the perfect choice for those of us who don't need the 2.x Ghz processor and the 512Mb+ ram. I expected this O.S. to be similar to Windows NT only better... and at first it was!! The system was rock solid in operating stability and my HDD was in great shape ( although they could use some improvements on the defrag utility )I honestly thought... ahh, here it is the operating system for my laptop.
Then the infamous day... "...error reading memory 0x0000000..." I had too much on my machine for me to start all over again!! I went into the services manager and tracked the problem to the print spool... set it to start manually and the problem was fixed
Wait a second this is too good... about three days after I thought I had the problem fixed a new "much more fun" problem started some of my programs refused to start... Hmmm better check things out... "task manager- dang won't run... fine I'll go into regedit and track it from there- nope that won't run either. Okay, I'll check my services... nope answer isn't there. Hmmm Safe Mode... yep, everything works fine... Now to go through all of these drivers... Aurggggh it's still not fixed... Hmmm what's this... Microsoft say's they're having problems with Windows 2000 in regards to memory allocation... Hello?? Are we going to fix it anytime soon?? Windows 2000 would be a great product if Microsoft would fix the memory allocation bugs...
