Software Reviews of Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional Upgrade [OLD VERSION]

Customer Review: Very stable and versatile OS
Summary: 5 Stars

I agree that this is one of the best operating systems that MS has published. While there were some concerns and problems with third party manufacturers not having suitable drivers when this was first released, I believed this has been solved. The only time I have encountered a problem is with super-cheapo ... hardware.

I have a fully functional network at home that uses nothing but W2K and it works like a charm. I have never had a system crash due to OS problems. I have had a couple of peices of software that caused problems, but after looking into the problem I found that the software was problematic on all OSs.

I personally have never had any problems getting my hardware to work with this OS, it auto detects ... near everything and if you check the Windows Update regularly there are usually hardware driver updates available there. It works with all of my software including games like Dark Age of Camelot,Jedi Knight 2, Serious Sam, Max Payne, and several other resource hogs. The only game, like I said before, that caused a problem was Return to Wolfenstein.

I recommend this software to anyone who wants to change their OS. It will work for anyone from a home user to a business environment. It provides all the utilities and security of the NT architechture along with providing a user friendly appearance and ease of operation.

Customer Review: Less hype more perfomance
Summary: 5 Stars

To put it simply, Win 2K Pro is "the" OS you should have on your PC. The reasons are pretty obvious and simple ...

1. Rock-solid stability compared to previous Microsoft's OSs.

2. Familar look and feel with Win 9X/ME shall make you feel more at home with this new product.

3. Superb backward compatibility. Most of my earlier apps run on Win 2K, even some old 16-bit applications for a change !!

4. Supports both FAT32 and NTFS filesystems. Take your pick according to your requirements. NTFS has special features like encryption and security.

5. Built on time-tested WinNT technology.

Should I say more ....

Customer Review: great OS
Summary: 5 Stars

i find in windows 2000 is perfect for my games... but some games dont support windows 2000. i tested it, if not support or working. i can uninstall it. why ever you got problem? why not uninstall your old game that dont support this purely 32 bit OS.
you will do fine. i got working on new project to unveiling new
system will be desktop/server pc. it's dual cpu pc. i ll use linux and windows 2000 for my dual boot system. i note some users have bad skill on nt or win 2000, like home users. if you are gamer guy, and dont want know how works or how use deeper controls then stay away from this win 2000. it not for home user with no skill. if you are home user with much skilled, you can have your win 2000. but have you heard of linux? you can try mandrake linux, it's easy to use OS.

Customer Review: A "Solid" Windows for the Power User
Summary: 3 Stars

I've installed this a number of times & set up a peer to peer network. I'm not a WinGuru, but I'm not a novice, either. It's more stable than WinME and allows me more control of other accounts on the same machine. I strongly recommend this for parents who want to keep teens from downloading and installing all kinds of software on their systems. If you can manage Win98 or WinME, you can manage 2000 Pro.

Give it plenty of memory--like any version of Windows, the more RAM, the fewer crashes. 256 MB should be considered the MINIMUM these days.

I have a major gripe with Microsoft over the name of this version, though. What's with the "Professional" monicker? Is ther a "Windows 2000 Amateur" version available? I think not! Why not call it what it is--Windows 2000 Workstation? This disingenuity is like Starbucks serving their smallest coffee and calling it a "tall." As if they served a "short!"

PS This is a "solid" Windows relative to Microsoft standards, not relative to the solidity of, say Linux or QNX.

Customer Review: Power and Stability--Windows 2000
Summary: 4 Stars

When deciding on an operating system (OS), several factors come into play. Will this OS be intalled onto a laptop or desktop? Is it networked? Will I use this for "business type applications" or "personal type applications"? Do I need strong multimedia capabilities?

Windows 2000 Professional is an extremely stable OS. After running it for almost two weeks non-stop, I never had a single problem. Crashes and the infamous "blue screen of death" became obsolete things of the past (unless you're using ME). As long as I did what the OS told me, for example not installing unsigned drivers, the OS behaved the way I wanted it to.

Windows 2000 is also an excellent machine for networking, which is simplified by helpful wizards that will guide even a novice through. Because it is so simple to accomplish, this is a favorite OS for laptop users and businesses.

Windows 2000 lacks multimedia capabilities found in Windows ME. Some very simplistic multimedia functions are lost in this OS... If you are finding a gaming system, this is NOT it. Another downfall is that many of the drivers are special for 2000, because it lacks the DOS background in ME. This is very similar to XP. Do not worry about this problem however, because almost all equipment will have 2000 drivers.

Finally, Windows 2000 looks a lot like ME, making it convenient for an individual who is used to the 9x/ME environment to convert over to the 2000 environment, without crossing over the problems of ME.

This is a great OS, however, for the individual desiring the stability and power of this NT based system, as well as the multimedia components of 9x/ME, Windows XP Professional is the way to go...
