Customer Review: VERSION VARIATION Summary: 3 StarsI was disappointed in the Windows 7 Home Premium which came installed in my Dell computer. The task bars took up at least two inches of the vertical dimension of my monitor. However, when I uploaded the version on the disc which came from Dell, it was different and more to my liking. It seems there are already more than one version floating around.

Customer Review: Good Upgrade but I miss Windows Mail Summary: 4 StarsI purchased the Windows 7 upgrade because my Vista operating system had become unstable and could not be repaired. The best resolution seemed to be to install Windows 7. After having my laptop checked for viruses and other malware, I installed Window 7. The installation went without a hitch. I have had no big problems with Windows 7, but there are some things I don't like. One is that it is more restrictive, probably for security reasons, than previous versions. Another is that the Program list from the start menu is confined to a single, small list box on the left side of the screen. It is not possible to change the size of the list box or copy a shortcut from the list and paste it to the screen. Windows 7 does not come with an email program, but Microsoft does offer Windows Live Mail. I tried it but didn't like it. For one, the program colors are quite light and the text does not stand out very well. I am unable to copy email addresses from the contact manager so that I can paste them into another program. Its importation of data from Windows Mail resulted in what seem to me to be unnecessary folders, including two large folders (text size) named Outbox and Storage Folders which perform no function, at least in how I use the program. Under Storage Folders are three folders named Drafts, Sent items, and Deleted items which appear to serve no purpose (these folders are duplicated under the name of my primary email account located just above them.) However, it is not possible to delete them. I tried several other email programs but decided to stick with Windows Live Mail because it could import all my contacts and messages (and message folders) quite smoothly, whereas it would have been a hassle to do so with the other programs because Windows Mail will export only to Outlook or Microsoft Exchange. A positive about Windows Live Mail is that it includes a good calendar with options to include appointments, holidays and birthdays. I do wish, however, that Microsoft had allowed the user the option to install Windows Mail. I think the reason it didn't is because it wants to force the user to use the Windows Live toolbar that includes other features similar to what Google offers. It also irritates me that, when using Windows Explorer, there are several folders that are inaccessible. There may be some way to access them (or a good reason not to access them), but I haven't figured it out. Windows 7 includes an abbreviated version of Roxio 9 for disc copying, burning, etc. Those programs are available in a portion of the Toolbar for Business use. I didn't like the clutter of the toolbar and deleted the portion for Business use. I figured the Roxio tools would be made available thereafter in the main Program menu, but they weren't. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling Roxio but could not get it to appear on the main Program menu. It appears that the program will only install on the Business use portion of the toolbar, which cannot be reconstituted after being deleted (that I could determine). Fortunately, Windows 7 is stable and more user friendly than Vista. I could comment more but shall l avoid the temptation. All in all, I am satisfied with Windows 7 but hope Microsoft makes some changes in future updates that will make me even more satisfied.
Customer Review: Nightmare Summary: 1 StarsJust installed Windows 7 upgrade on my VAIO all-in-one computer.
I really liked the VAIO but had horrible problems with Vista 64-bit over the past year (very slow, never worked well with my new Lexmark X7675 printer, never worked well with my VPN at work, very slow to reboot (about 10 minutes)).
So far, Windows 7 has been an unbelievable nightmare. I've had the following problems:
- the Windows Upgrade Advisor just hung (left me no choice but to do the install without the upgrade advisor)
- reboots are very slow (10-12 minutes, worse than vista)
- after several reboots (well after the install was complete), I got error message that the files on my C drive needed to be checked (this took about 30 minutes but no problems where found)
- seems to think that virus software is not running and wants to restart (even thought it is already running)
- opening applications is very slow.
I feel that I have been swindled (once again) by Microsoft.
