Customer Review: Great for this shortcut junkie

Imagine interacting with the newest version of your (least?) favorite tool and being disappointed in drastic changes in the layout, key functionality, and behavior. I can see and understand the frustrations users are experiencing with the new version of Word. However, I'll offer a review from the perspective of a heavy shortcut user. If you know the shortcut keys in 2003 (accelerator keys) you may find the new interface use-able and actually helpful. This long-time user still relies on shortcuts, likes the new interface when it's needed, and has some tips for reluctant upgraders.

As a long-time Word user, the first time I started the 2007 version I saw the new ribbon, scrolled through the tabs, and then proceeded to write using the shortcuts I'm used to without much grief.

I use the 2003 shortcuts for everything from cut & paste to fonts, styling, save, print, copy & paste styling, insert, captions, footnotes, headers and footers, and bullets and numbering. Word 2007 preserves a large number of these so you can enter them without interacting with the dreaded ribbon.

If I don't know the shortcut it usually means I'm not familiar with the option. At this point I'm as much a novice as a new word processor user; the interface helps as it feels Web 2.0-inspired [the interface, not the social part of Web 2.0] (haha, imagine a desktop application copying the Web that was trying to copy desktop apps). Similar options are grouped together, I can quickly scroll through the tabs, and the layout is fairly consistent between installations (between home and work, for example).

Pros
* Allows 2003 shortcuts, awesome
* Re-organized tab for the things I didn't know about
* Templates carried over
* Change style sets (maximum change, least amount of effort)
* Less flexibility as a good thing: I'm not compelled to get the user interface (UI) just right between work and home.
* I can add shortcuts to the quick access toolbar (top left near the office button)

Cons
* I'm not used to the quick part document properties (how do I change the style and where are these fields set?)
* UI changes (not so bad since I use shortcuts, but see other reviews on Amazon)
* Irritating "page break has styling" bug lives on (sometimes a Header 1 styling will exist on a manual page break)

While the 2007 version doesn't adversely affect shortcut junkies, other reviews will show the frustrations of breaking an old design. I won't say that everyone will like it. But if you're forced to update (e.g. at work), here are some tips.

Tip 1: One of my coworkers hated it, but found it easier_to-use after discovering the quick launch tool bar to save favorite commands.

Tip 2: There is an interactive tool to help learn the new tools by clicking on the old ones. If you know how to find a feature in Word 2003, click on it to get both an explanation and visual demo of how to find it in the new version. [...]

Tip 3: If you find yourself needing to work with users still using Word 2003, the Office button > options > save section lets you default to the previous version. I'm not sure, though, why they didn't call .docx the "Word Document 2007" format (instead of just "Word Document"). Could it really be the last format version?

The tips might help those stuck with a Word 2007 upgrade. I like the new interface because I love shortcuts (and they still work). You *might* like the new version if you're a shortcut junkie too.
