Software Reviews of Office for Mac 2011 Home & Student -Family PackCustomer Review: Comrade workers, the Ministry of Software has prepared your glorious upgrade! Summary: 1 Stars
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
I am not an admirer of Microsoft. I really dislike their nerdy, complicated, unintuitive products which are not so much designed as piled up out of disconnected features. As a longtime Mac enthusiast I value elegance and simplicity, but MS Office has always been the very definition of feature bloat. This is a company not capable of producing clean, quality products which could stand on their own against fair competition. Microsoft got itself positioned as the main source of PC software not by skill but blind luck. They have abused this monopoly position ever since by extracting fees from users worldwide for "upgrades" which too often are pointless, buggy, poorly tested, and unresponsive to customer requests. In many cases they have done nothing to address glaring incompatibilities across their own product line. If the Soviet Ministry of Tractors had produced software, this would be what they would have produced. That's what happens when a company has no competition in a large market, no motivation to provide a better user experience, and only one strategy - to milk its customer base through planned obsolescence. And they call it a Great Leap Forward.
But lets' be realistic folks, I need to use MS Office on my Mac for the same reason you do, to exchange files with colleagues and coworkers who, through their unfortunate life choices, are forever in chains, sitting in windowless grey cubicles, pecking at plastic Dell keyboards from 8 to 5, slaves to the Ministry of Software. So, with this inspiring background, let's look at the new Office for Mac 2011. Is it necessary? Worthwhile? Does it solve outstanding problems?
As everyone knows, Office 2007 for PC completely changed the interface and introduced new file formats, .docx, .xlsx, and .pptx. Why and for what benefit? Oh, some obscure blather about XML, advanced data structures, blah blah, new applications now possible, blah blah. But is there enough new functionality to justify causing millions of people to spend weeks relearning their Office software and being obligated to convert between file formats? I think not. We are talking thousands of person-years of non productive labor here just to adapt to the 'upgrade,' more labor than went into building Hoover Dam! Worth it? I have made a private survey of PC-using friends; all of them complain of being unable to find familiar features and generally resenting the whole thing. Pretty much everyone understands that the 2007 PC Office `upgrade' was not about a better product which makes your life easier; it was about justifying the Ministry beaurocracy and their belief that it was`time' to extract more of your money just to allow you to keep doing more or less the same thing.
OK then, is MS Office for Mac 2011 at very least, COMPATIBLE with Office for PC? Is it even compatible with earlier verions of Office Mac? Because it certainly was not either of those in the past. Office Mac 2008 would not open Excel spreadsheets created in earlier versions of Office Mac 2004 or Office PC if they contained macros. (Microsoft, which has more than 97,000 employees, gave the excuse that they `did not have time' to get VBA macro support into Office Mac 2008.)
I am happy to report this has been fixed. Spreadsheets with macros now open. Thank you.
Before you get too happy however let's go over the macros used in Word 2011. Yes, VBA is now incorporated across the suite. Unfortunately it's just not the same macro language as "Word Basic" used in earlier versions of Office Mac. What's that, you were not aware of this fine and subtle distinction? You must not be an advanced scholar of Microsoft, you may need to be sent to the countryside for re-education! I discovered this when I tried to open a Word 2004 template I use every day, which contains a number of macros I painstakingly wrote years ago. Does it still work? No, it doesn't. Gives me an error message "This file contains Word Basic macros.. Word Basic macros do not work in Office 2011 for Mac.." Thanks a lot, jerks. What am I supposed to do now, spend days to rewrite the macros in the new VBA? Keep using Word 2004? Give up? Where is the backward compatibility we expect from manufacturers of integrity in exchange for our customer loyalty?
And now for PPT. For years, Powerpoint has carried a frustrating incompatibility between Mac and PC versions which shows up when one drags or pastes a graphic into a PowerPoint file on the Mac. When this file is subsequently opened on a PC, one will get not the picture but an extremely annoying error message which says something about "Quicktime and a tiff decompressor are needed to view image..." Result: panicked phone calls over the weekend from my colleagues who cannot decipher the slide deck I prepared for them Friday afternoon. There was never a real justificaton for this problem, which turns out to be a hole on the Office for PC side, not the Mac; Microsoft was simply too lazy to PROGRAM THE COMPUTER to deal with its Mac user base. Has this now been remedied between Office Mac 2011 and Office PC 2007? Nope. It has not. And it almost doesn't matter. The Ministry has known about this for years has never cared enough even to warn customers how to avoid the problem.
So here's the point: Given Microsoft's vast monopoly influence over the work lives of 500 million people worldwide and trillions of hours of their labor, they should fix problems responsibly, they should upgrade responsibly, and they should meet user needs responsibly. Unfortunately they don't, don't and don't. What can you say about a company that can't be bothered to provide compatibility among versions of THEIR OWN PRODUCT across platforms or generations? So yes, you and I and all the other workers, peasants and students will continue under the stranglehold of MS Office. And yes, we will have to accept that the Ministry is empowered to force us as customers to be the beta testers and find the problems - why spend money to do it themselves when we are a captive audience? Yes, they may slowly fix some of the defects if they have nothing better to do. Yes, they will waste billions of hours of our time without giving it a single thought. And yes, the Soviet Union did eventually collapse in on itself and fade into the dustbin of history.
